CONCRETE RELIEF: GABE’S ESCAPE TO THE COURT
Meet Gabe.
Swapping boots is part of Gabriel Harvey’s daily routine. From the job site to the courts Harvey finds his balance.
Harvey has played soccer for 10 years and is now a passionate baller. When he’s not on the courts or the field, Harvey spends his days working as a maintenance man for housing complexes.
Working long shifts from 8am to 5pm, soccer has become an integral part of Harvey’s life. The game gives him something to look forward to beyond just the physical benefits of playing; it offers personal success.
“I’m at work practically all day,” he starts. “Soccer is a big stress reliever, physical wins…are very necessary no matter what your choice of sport/activity is.”
Harvey’s post-work ritual begins as soon as he clocks out, driving down to Chicano or Lauderbach park, changing in the car, dropping the work boots for his soccer boots, and finally, hopping in a game.
“Just being out there working on my own game and winning with friends helps remind me that payment comes in many more forms than just money.”
Harvey began playing in the community last year after learning about Chicano Futsal and Chula Vista Pickup from a friend. What started as a “here and there” occurrence blossomed into a deep love for the community, now playing almost every day.
For Harvey these communities are about togetherness and the joy of playing the beautiful game.
“It’s quick pickup with people who have similar interests,” he begins. “It provides a sense of belonging.”
These groups are built on pure passion for the game and love for our city.
As Harvey puts it, “almost everything in America is a money grab…having organized and free activity…brings together the whole city.”
The concrete is joy, love, and togetherness, displayed through the beautiful game.
